How Much Light do Orchids Require?

Orchids and light

Orchids and light

A lot of people have asked about how much light orchids require. Leaf colour is a good indicator. Generally speaking, the leaves should be bright green rather than dark green. Dark green indicates too little light while reddish green indicated too much light. Some Orchids require more light than others. Position those that do in a south or west facing window, but be sure to protect the leaves from excessive heat or move the plants back from the window on hot days. Miltonias, phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums prefer lower light intensities and should be located further away from the window or placed in a window facing east or north.

Caring for Cut Flowers

Keeping cut flowers

Keeping cut flowers

The number one consideration when caring for cut flowers is to ensure the longest life possible. When cutting flowers you should awlays trim the stem at an angle. Take care not to crush the stems (When using scissors) It is much better to use a very sharp knife or a flower cutting tool. Once trimmed, place them in a clean, non metalic containing flower food (if supplied) If not there are several natural methods including 2tps sugar or even a little lemonade!. Fill the vase with lukewarm water making sure that no leaves are underwater.
Display your flowers in a cool, shady place away from draughts, direct heat or sunlight. Always remove any fading flowers. When changing the water, bleach the vase and rinse to kill the old bacteria. Leaving them in a dirty vase will shorten the life of your flowers.
